Gathering of Ethiopian and Kenyan Pastoralists
Date: 27 - 30 August 2008 |
| |
| Pastoralist leaders from across Kenya and Ethiopia will come together at a gathering in Kajiado District, Kenya from 27th - 30th August. Discussions will centre on building common understandings, and how pastoralist populations in Kenya and Ethiopia can better work with their governments. For the Kenyan deliberations, issues around how pastoralists can facilitate the work of the new Ministry of State for the Development of Northern Kenya and other Arid Lands will be top of the agenda. In addition, issues such as land rights, conflict and the historical perspective on pastoral development will be discussed. The Ethiopian delegates will take the opportunity to strengthen ties across their common border and develop better understanding of governmental processes in Kenya. The pastoralists will also be joined by senior officials from both the Ethiopian and Kenyan governments during the final two days of the gathering. The gathering is being organised by a group of Kenyan and Ethiopian pastoralist leaders, supported by Kenyan NGO MPIDO and PCI. |
